BENNIE Kというユニット、知ってる？
2005年にDreamlandという楽曲が大ヒットしたことで一躍有名になったヒップホップデュオのことだ。
コカ・コーラのCM曲といえばわかる人も多いと思う。
そのBENNIE Kが、昨年12月1日に12年ぶりの新譜であり、ラストシングルとなる「FINALE」をリリースした。
YUKIの伸びやかな歌声とCICOのパンチの聞いたラップは健在で、まったくブランクを感じさせない”BKサウンド”だ。
僕たちが待ち望んでいたものがすべて詰まっている。
Freaks（BENNIE Kのファンのこと）を思って作ってくれたようで嬉しかった。
なぜ、いま、BENNIE Kについて書こうと思ったのか。それは、彼女たちが1月24日で活動を終了するからだ。

僕にとってBENNIE Kが僕ランキングの上位アーティストになったのは、2017年と最近のことだ。
うちの奥さんの影響でBENNIE Kを聞き始めたのだけれども、最初は「Dreamland」を歌っている人という認識しかなかった。
そもそも洋楽派。エアロスミスとかデビッドボウイとか、音楽最高っていうのが溢れてこぼれ出しているようなアーティストが好きだ。
ヘッドホンを深くかぶって、ドラムとギターの音で脳みそをぶっ飛ばすようにして聞く。
邦楽は歌詞が耳に入って来すぎて、あまり積極的に聞いてこなかった。
しかも、BENNIE Kは、ジャンルでいうとHIPHOP。
ちょっとした先入観を持って聞き始めた。
まずは、知っている「Dreamland」。次は「サンライズ」というアップテンポな明るい曲。
そして、ドラマの主題歌になった「モノクローム」に、「オアシス」…
意外とどの曲も耳によくなじんだ。
歌詞が英語交じりのせいもあるかもしれないけど、本人たちがすごく楽しそうなのだ。
「へぇ」とか上から目線で評価したりしていたけれども、いつの間にかどっぷりはまっていた。
嬉しそうに歌って、溢れてこぼれてくる思いが独特のワールドを作っている。その感じが僕にフィットした。
「ディスコ先輩」みたいなコミカルなディスコソングがあると思えば、「Music Traveler」のような旅心をくすぐるような大人なサウンドもある。
どの曲も個性的で曲調もリズムも違っているのに、ちゃんとBKサウンドになっている。
それは、彼女たちの高い歌唱力ときめ細やかな曲作りによるだけでなく、楽しみながら音楽を作っていたからじゃないかと、勝手に思っている。
でも、それだけでは僕ランキングの上位アーティストには認定されない。
やっぱり心に響く曲があるからだ。
僕にとってのBENNIE Kベストソングは、「Better days」だ。
「いつかたどり着くべき場所がきっとあるから」この出だしでぐいっと引き寄せられた。
父を亡くして、糸の切れた凧状態だったときに、この曲を聴いて自分は一人じゃないと我に返れた。
そして、次の一歩を踏み出せた。
だから今がある。
BENNIE Kが活動終了するのはとても寂しいけれども、彼女たちが最終楽曲FINALEで歌っているように「この終わりが、その始まり」。
彼女たちの始まりを楽しみにしたい。
